Clearmake Wins Project for Brisbane’s First Major Road Tunnel

2008 Telstra Business Awards winner, Clearmake, has been appointed by the Leighton Contractors and Baulderstone Hornibrook, Bilfinger Berger Joint Venture to design, manufacture, install and commission the ground water treatment plant for the Clem Jones Tunnel (CLEM7).

The system will remove heavy metals and other contaminants from groundwater extracted from the tunnel, so the water is safe to discharge into the local storm water system.

The CLEM7 is Brisbane’s first major road tunnel (formerly known as the North-South Bypass Tunnel).

The 6.8kilometre CLEM7 is being delivered on behalf of Brisbane City Council by Queensland toll road company, RiverCity Motorway Group. Scheduled to be open in 2010, the tunnel will link to five existing major motorways and arterial roads on the north and south sides of the Brisbane River, which combined carry 400,000 vehicles every day.

CLEM7 is the first critical component of the Brisbane Lord Mayor’s TransApex vision that aims to reduce deficiencies in the City’s urban road network. It is also one of the largest infrastructure projects ever to be undertaken in Queensland.

The major benefit of the tunnel is that it will bypass 23 existing sets of traffic lights, and provide an additional Brisbane River crossing. It will provide two lanes of traffic in each direction and when completed, will be the longest road tunnel in Australia.

This is an exciting key infrastructure project for Queensland and Clearmake is delighted to be part of the team.
